Borough Market
Borough Market
One of our main activities today was the Borough Market. I was really looking forward to this because I like going around and shopping at little booths, and trying different types of food.
| Salt Beef Bagel |
The first thing I tried was a bagel with salt beef and Emmental cheese. This was really good because the seller used a blowtorch to melt the cheese on top, which gave it extra delicious flavor. I have had salt beef before (corned beef) but it was not good so I was scared to try it again. However, this was much better, and I felt like a real UK resident eating it.
Next, I went around to the little shops in the market, and tested some different types of cheese. All of the ones I tried were great, but my favorite was the Hafod cheddar, from Wales. I decided to buy this not only because it tasted the best, but also because it was from in the UK, so it would be a better souvenir compared to a French cheese. I'm excited to eat the rest of it with crackers or an apple when I get home.
| Chocolate Strawberries |
Finally, it was time for dessert. My friends had all seen the chocolate strawberries on TikTok, so of course we had to get them. Even though the line looked long, the workers were super efficient with moving everyone through, so we had our strawberries in no time. As you can see in the picture, the strawberries were all nice and red, and looked fresh. The treat was really good, but I wish the chocolate had been a little darker to contrast with the sweet strawberries, rather than milk chocolate to just compound sweetness on top. In fact, I am generally someone who likes chocolate, but it was so sweet I couldn't eat the leftover chocolate (but Zoie ate it for me, so don't worry it didn't go to waste).
My main negative about the Borough Market is the general lack of toilets. I waited in a short line for three toilets, that ended up taking probably 15 minutes to get to. This seems like a real issue, especially on weekends, when I'm sure it gets much busier than it was on a Tuesday at noon.
Overall, this was a great experience at the Borough Market, and I would love to go back and try all the foods I saw but unfortunately had to bypass.
Hi Elsa!
ReplyDeleteIf the Borough Market is the one near London Bridge on the Southwark (pronounced "Sutherk") side of the Thames, you went there numerous times during our family trip to London when you were age 2. We stayed a couple of blocks away in Southwark.
Did you ride the Eye?
Hi Boppa, I remember my mom mentioning that I had been to the Borough Market, but I didn't realize we had stayed that close to it!
DeleteNo, we didn't ride the Eye because it moves so slowly, and once you're at the top you have the best view but you have to keep riding it until you get back down to the bottom.
Did many of the booths at the market offer samples? And is salt beef actually salty?
ReplyDeleteQuite a few offered samples either calling out for people to try them or at the cheese stand you could ask to try the different kinds. It was pretty salty but I think at least part of it was the cheese too. I like salt though so it was ok.
